A partnership that centers and supports Indigenous girls

Esteemed community,

It is with great joy and honor that we announce the New Songs Rising Initiative, a partnership between Seventh Generation Fund for Indigenous Peoples and Grantmakers for Girls* of Color to mobilize resources towards work that centers and supports Indigenous girls and their families and communities. This partnership seeks to resource Indigenous girls in the U.S. and occupied territories with abundance and intention. We are thrilled to announce the eight inaugural grantee organizations and projects, and to share our job announcement for a fund Manager to lead the New Songs Rising Initiative.

The New Songs Rising Initiative will intentionally expand opportunities for Indigenous girls through grantmaking, convening and community building, mentorship and peer support, with specific emphasis on Indigenous cultural work and practices that center healing. This initiative will resource entities that address the intersection of gender justice, climate/environmental justice, economic justice, education justice, and support Indigenous girls’ relationship to Earth. We are seeking to strengthen entities that support multi generational healing and organizing amongst Indigenous girls and women, that support the organizing capacity of Indigenous girls and women to resist state and colonial violence and gender-based violence that impacts Indigenous girls and women, and that advance the creation of art, music, and poetry that can be used to advance healing and uplift the voices of Indigenous girls and women.

With these pillars in mind, we are proud to recognize the eight inaugural grantees. Four of these projects and organizations are funded by the New Songs Rising Fund at G4GC, and four are supported by Seventh Generation Fund For Indigenous People’s Grants for Girls Vitality, which sits within the Thriving Women’s Program.

We are also seeking a Manager for the New Songs Rising Initiative! We seek someone with close proximity to Indigenous communities who will lead the visioning and implementation of the New Songs Rising Initiative, manage grantmaking and network-building amongst grantees, and lead community-directed solutions that center Indigenous girls and women. They will identify opportunities to engage donors in reimagining philanthropic practices in order to mitigate or repair the harm that many philanthropic institutions have inflicted on Native and Indigenous communities, and will work to ensure the Initiative centers and follows the leadership and wisdom of Indigenous girls through intergenerational, youth-centric participatory engagements and advisory boards. We invite you to share this job opportunity and help grow our team of visionary community leaders with deep ties to movement.

As we continue to center Indigenous girls, and support their wisdom and leadership, we invite you to celebrate this significant partnership and to share the announcement of this transformational Initiative with your communities.

In community and with gratitude,

Monique W. Morris, Ed.D., President and CEO, Grantmakers for Girls of Color
