An Urgent Conversation about the Movements Centering Girls of Color

After two years of collaborating and strategizing, our movement is stronger and more unified than ever. We are ready to take on the courageous and urgent conversations this moment requires.

On June 7, 2017, more than 125 funders met for an all-day convening in New York for an urgent conversation about safety and girls of color.

At the convening we heard from girls of color most impacted by interpersonal and state violence and how movements are responding. We explored how funders can best support efforts working to create safety. We focused on intersecting safety concerns facing girls of color, as prioritized by those leading movements. The convening explored safety broadly, while also providing space to examine specific forms of violence that are growing yet remain overlooked and underfunded, in such areas as:

Sexual violence and abuse;
Schools and policing; and
Migration and mobility.

We hope everyone walked away with a stronger sense of community and a deepened commitment to invest in the immediate and long-term needs and leadership of girls of color.

6:00pm	Welcome Reception and Dinner A chance to connect and chat with colleagues, make new connections, view the A Long Walk Home photo exhibit, and receive a primer on this year’s convening.

9:00am	Welcome, Introductions & Grounding
9:15am	Starting with Girlhood Stories Centering the day around the narratives from girls and women sharing their experiences with violence and creating safety. Opening performance by artists.
10:00am	Panel One: Re-Imagining Safety At Home and In Community, with Noel Altaha, Luz Marquez Benbow, Natalie Collier, and Maheen Kaleem A conversation that will explore the normalized, concurrent, and interpersonal violence girls of color face and the movements working to create safety. This conversation will make the explicit connection between interpersonal and state violence, and provide examples of how movements are responding.
11:15am	10-Minute Break
11:25am	Panel Two: Re-Imagining Safety In & Out of Systems, with Bre Campbell, Roksana Mun, Jeannette Pai-Espinosa, and Kabzuag Vaj Building on the prior panel, this conversation will specifically discuss the violence girls of color experience by systems. We will explore a few manifestations of state violence that occur in schools, juvenile and criminal justice systems and immigration as well as what movements are doing to address this violence and create safety.
12:40	Lunch & The Beautiful Project Lunch will be a free space for attendees to build relationships and spend time exploring The Beautiful Project’s powerful exhibit.
1:45pm	Keynote: Re-Imagining Safety As A Core Strategy for Community Justice, with Alvin Starks & Monique Morris This keynote will provide funders with an analysis and sense of urgency for funding movements that center girls of color as a broader racial/ gender/ social justice priority under this current administration. This discussion will work to provide a framework for why girls of color movement building is a core strategy for safety and freedom for all.
3:00pm	Small Groups: What Do You Need, What’s Next Led by our planning committee, break out sessions will offer specific, tailored discussions to explore what funders need and what’s on the horizon for our shared work.
4:00pm	The Future of Grantmakers for Girls of Color A Frontline Solutions presentation on G4GC research, infrastructure progress, and insights we’ve gathered from our community of funders about how G4GC can build a long-term future
5:00pm	Next Steps, with Allison Brown and Tynesha McHarris
